After an unsuccessful time at Levante, Wellington Silva has switched his loan to Segunda Division side CD Alcoyano where he will remain for the rest of the season. Hopefully he will have a better time than he did in La Liga, where he was dropped altogether after Levante manager Martinez was said to be unimpressed with his attitude. Luke Freeman had a more successful spell on loan at Stevenage and has been rewarded with a permanent move to the club, scoring two goals in his first game since the move. Meanwhile, Henri Lansbury played the final five minutes as West Ham beat Portsmouth and Pedro Botelho was again left out by Rayo vallecano, with reports suggesting he had some sort of disagreement with the club. Chuks Aneke was suspended for Stevenage after his red card against Leyton Orient and Sanchez Watt did also not feature in Sheffield Wednesday’s loss to Charlton.
Samuel Galindo: The Bolivian started for Gimnastic de Tarragona in a tough fixture away at high-flying Celta Vigo. In a valiant first half performance, Gimnastic had the better of the chances but failed to convert any against a lacklustre Celta side. However, the home side picked up their performance in the second half and Lago struck ten minutes after the break. Galindo was then immediately substituted but to no avail as Celta held out for the win.
Carlos Vela: The forward played the full ninety minutes as his side was thumped 6-1 away at Mallorca and were knocked out of the Copa Del Ray. Despite taking the lead, four goals in the space of seven minutes cost his Sociedad side as they crumbled before half time. He was then brought on with twenty minutes left as his side bounced back to earn an impressive 1-0 win away to Valencia. The home side lacked any real attacking intent and were punished by Griezmann, who was fortunate to score after the ball bounced off his arm in the build up.
Nicklas Bendtner: The Dane returned from injury for face Chelsea, but his Sunderland side was left to rue missed chanced as they came away from Stamford Bridge empty handed. He appeared to have reasonable success against a leaky Chelsea defence, but failed to take any chances that were presented to him, including two excellent opportunities with just Petr Cech to beat. Twice he appeared to be fouled in the penalty area, but the referee gave nothing to cap a frustrating day for the Black Cats.
Joel Campbell: Campbell was an unused substitute in Lorient’s midweek cup win at Le Mans, but had a prominet role as they drew 2-2 at Nantes in Ligue 1. The Costa Rican came on just before his side went ahead through Coutadeur. Although Nancy immediately equalised, Capmbell gave Lorient the lead twenty minutes later with a lovely finish – dare I say reminiscent of a certain number 14? While he is some way off being cast in bronze as the Frenchman has been, he shows great promise at such a tender age and will only improve with experience – he is definitely one to watch for the future.
Kyle Bartley: The Englishman started in the centre of defence for Rangers as the overcame a resilient St Johnstone side to keep the pressure on Celtic at the top of the SPL. Nikica Jelavic got both goals for the Gers whilst the only blot on their defence was when Carlos Bocanegra turned into his own net after Haber had headed it goalwards. After the game, Bartley and teammate Edu were reportedly the subject of alleged racial abuse on Twitter, and the matter is now being dealt with by the police.
Emmanuel Frimpong: The robust midfielder started for Wolves at White Hart Lane and seemingly relished the opportunity to help Spurs drop points. The Ghanaian put in a number of strong challenges to break down the Spurs attacks and was booked shortly after Roger Johnson gave Wolves the lead. He was warned to be careful by the referee after being penalised for a number of challenges, despite getting the ball fairly in many of them – it’s fair to say the crowd weren’t on his side, perhaps influencing the decisions. He then nearly doubled Wolves’ lead with an excellent volley that forced a good save from Friedel. Modric equalised for Tottenham and after another foul in the second half, McCarthy realised the midfielder was on his final warning and took him off. He left a notable gap in the Wolves side as Spurs created more chances after he was replaced but could not take advantage of them, meaning it ended 1-1.
